The Alcian Blue pH 0.5 kit is indicated for the staining of highly sulfurated acidic mucins.
Alcian Blue staining is used to visualize acidic mucins in epithelial and connective tissue. The dye molecule, a cuprophthalocyanine, binds to the sulfur and/or carboxyl groups of mucins. The pH of the Alcian Blue solution is crucial for the selective staining of mucins: at pH 0.5, only highly sulfurized mucins stain.
