The Alcian Blu pH 2.5 kit is indicated for the staining of acidic mucopolysaccharides.
Alcian Blue staining is used to visualize acidic mucins in epithelial and connective tissue. The dye molecule, a cuprophthalocyanine, binds to the sulfur and/or carboxyl groups of mucins. The pH of the Alcian Blu solution is crucial for the selective staining of mucins: at pH 2.5, mucopolysaccharides and both sulfurized and carboxylated acid glycoproteins are stained.
Alcian Blu does not stain neutral mucins.
