Picrofuchsin Van Gieson is a ready-to-use staining kit used for the demonstration of collagen in connective tissue.

In Picrofuchsin Van Gieson staining, the two main components are fuchsin and picric acid, which simultaneously and selectively stain different tissue structures: fuchsin stains collagen red to fuchsia, while picric acid stains connective tissue, muscle tissue, and glial fibrils yellow. Collagen and mucus are stained in shades ranging from red to yellow.

Counterstaining with Weigert’s iron hematoxylin stains nuclei brown-black.
