The silver impregnation staining kit is indicated for staining connective tissue reticular fibers.

Reticular fibers form the supporting tissue in various organs, forming the fine reticular architecture in highly cellular sites such as the liver, bone marrow, kidney, and lymphoid organs.

Lattice fibers, also referred to as argyrophilic fibers, are not highlightable with conventional staining techniques, but must be treated with silver salts. In the silver impregnation coloring kit, an ammonia solution, which contains silver, and a reducing reagent allow metallic silver ions to settle on the lattice fibers, coloring them black.
